9/2011 The Salvation Army

Volunteer Position Available: Christmas Kettle Workers

Position Description:  We need volunteer bell ringers . It’s fun and very rewarding – and you can do it for as little as two hours! Many shifts are available. Families are welcome. We encourage civic and social groups also. Ring bells to help raise funds for The Salvation Army.

Expected Time Commitment (Hours/month): 2 hours minimum

Position Location: Throughout Malden, Medford and Everett

Qualifications/Skills Preferred:  Reliable, friendly, willing to ask for donations. Willing to work outdoors, and stand by the kettle.

9/2011 Mystic Valley Elder Services:

Volunteer Position Available: Help A Child Read.

Position Description: In the Reading Partners Program, specially-trained volunteers are placed in local public schools as literacy coaches. Children in kindergarten through third grade are referred to the program by teachers and are matched with volunteers for weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions. Reading Partner volunteers are supported by on-site coordinators and the RSVP Literacy Coordinator. The Reading Partner Program provides volunteers with an opportunity to help children who need extra assistance with their reading skills.

Expected Time Commitment (Hours/month): Four hours per week, September through June.

8/2011 The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc.

Volunteer Position Available: English Language Tutor

Position Description: One-on-One Tutors at The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) help foreign-born adults learn English as well as gain an understanding of the American culture.  After completing the application process and attending training, the one-on-on tutor is matched with a student to provide individualized language instruction. The next training day will be 8/20/11.  Students and tutors can meet either at The ILC headquarters or the Malden Library at mutually convenient times one to two hours per week.  The volunteer tutors not only get the satisfaction of helping their students, they learn some of the student’s language and culture in the process.

Expected Time Commitment (Hours/month): 1-2 hours/week

Position Location: The ILC headquarters or the Malden Library

Qualifications/Skills Preferred: High school diploma required. College preferred. Teaching experience is helpful but not required. Tutors must complete an application and attend training before being matched to a student.  Tutors should be prepared to committ to working with their assigned student for 9 months.

Mission: The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) of Malden, MA is a non-profit organization that helps immigrants and refugees become successful workers, parents and community members through direct service programs and public education. Our direct service program provides free year-round English classes to immigrant and refugee adults in Greater Boston. The ILC further supports immigrants through the Public Education Institute, which informs Americans about the economic and social contributions of immigrants in our society. Volunteer Position Available: We are seeking many tutoring and daycare volunteers.

Position Description: Tutoring children from 5-18 years old with their school work or providing daycare in the mornings.

Expected Time Commitment (Hours/month): 1-2 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Location: 350 Cross Street in Malden.

Qualifications/Skills preferred: No skills necessary – training and support is provided! Must pass a criminal background check before you are allowed to participate in the program.

Mission: To end family homelessness in the Greater Boston area.
